dex, deux.

dex season two comes out today, and we begin our new year of programming with two performance videos from Sky Macklay and Ben Giroux. we also started a Patreon. read more below.

it has been a great first year of operations for this library. we managed to:

  • release more than 10 hours of content for our first season, with international artists supplying hundreds of gigabytes of commissioned content for your use.

  • secure initial funding from Peabody LAUNCHPad/The Johns Hopkins University through the Peabody Launch Grant.

  • secure tax-exempt status, allowing us to participate in the Google for Nonprofits program.

  • reach more than 12,000 visitors online organically.

getting this program initially funded was a success, but we need to keep going if we want to make this project an ongoing endeavor. to that end, we’ve started a Patreon page where our patrons can help fund our productions, expand the library, and help keep the digital lights on, and where individual donors can make no-frills substantial contributions to our mission. if you like what you see, consider making a tax-deductible* contribution to us below.

now in our second season of programming, we are continuing our commitment to being a library of people, not just sounds. these next coming audiovisual samples are not just authentic, stylized films, but they provide useful content to sample (and as always, licensed for free under CC-BY 4.0).

ben giroux for dex season 2

our season 2 programming starts right now with Sky Macklay on prepared oboe, and continues with hours of high-quality CC-BY content. this first entry is quite special, however. with a paper towel core jammed in the oboe’s horn, Macklay provides both brazenly loud and imperceptibly soft moments, the most memorable of which are an analog ring modulation glissando, a coda of underwater reed sounds, and many, many multiphonics.

we can’t wait for you to see what we have coming next. in fact, for the next five weeks, there will be at least one new AV entry for dex, delivered on mondays, which will comprise the first half of our second season programming.

  • Sky Macklay, prepared oboe, April 14, 2024

  • Ben Giroux, multiple percussion, April 21, 2024

  • Max Coleman, bassoon and electronics, April 28, 2024

  • Clara Kelly, soprano voice, May 5, 2024

  • Cameron Church, printer, May 12, 2024

beyond digital programming, we plan on expanding into physical programming in our hub locations of Los Angeles, Baltimore/DC, and Orlando (more on that soon!).

ok, that’s dex season 2 part i. over and out! –Seb
