An‏‏‎nouncing dexFest 2024

Wednesday Oct. 9 - Friday Oct. 11, 2024 from 6PM - 12AM PDT at LA Artcore

LOS ANGELES, CA – On Oct. 9 - 11, Dex Digital Sample Library, the open-access collection of archived, commissioned Creative Commons samples, presents dexFest 2024, a three-day recording arts festival featuring local LA artists and renowned multi-instrumental improvisers. The festival is part of a recording initiative set out by the online library to establish a collection of Creative Commons recordings for artists and creatives to use in projects without fear of copyright infringement. Continuing the series of live events set out by the organization, this festival is intended to be held once a year every year as an accelerator for artistic talent.

The line-up includes 18 local acts, with artists like HAYES, Tim Feeney, Kozue Matsumoto, Matt LeVeque, Ivan Cunningham, Battaglia Teglia Duo, Paul Yorke, Cameron Church alongside exhibitions by visual artists like Shoshi Watanabe and talks by featured guests. Each act is presented as a live recording session, rather than a concert, positioning audience members as participants who are privy to the process of musical production.

As each act is recorded live for curation into the library collection, festival goers are able to revisit the event, while patrons outside of LA are given a chance to experience the festival at home. All of the recordings from the festival will be released under CC BY 4.0 International licenses allowing anyone to use any note, groove, or sound from the festival for any creative projects with the sole condition that they acknowledge the owners of the work (more info at dexdsl.com/copyright).  “We are really excited to present this line-up, full of such tremendous talent” says Dex Digital Sample Library artistic director Seb Suarez, “and doubly so, we are happy to offer these recording sessions to the general public, both at the time of recording and through our open-access collection.”

In their previous season, the non-profit arts organization added recordings of Sky Macklay and Sam Pluta to their collection, as well as several other experimental sample and foley recordings like Printer Sounds by Cameron Church.

Through live events like their fundraising festivals for Kozue Matsumoto’s Japan Ensemble (Summer Giving at LA Artcore) and through their work promulgating Creative Commons licensure as a robust framework in the US arts sector, they’re laying down the groundwork for self-determination within local arts communities as well as nationwide. This event continues partnerships with LA Artcore and local artists Kozue Matsumoto’s Japan Ensemble and Shoshi Watanabe.
